My dear Old Jane, ever hopeful of a feed and a scratch.
You may have gathered that I am not always sitting at my desk in the office! Like mothers, editors need a break too. So, when there is shearing to be done, I am in the shearing shed, alongside my husband (the shearer). Last week, it happened that my oldest pet sheep, Old Jane, was in for shearing. Of course, she asked for a feed, and how could I refuse that smiley face? The envy of the rest of the mob, she smugly stands over her small bucket of barley until it's empty. Oh, and she loves to have her rump scratched at the same time. She's been known to walk across in front of me to make sure I know she needs a back rub. Jane is 12 years old, and her breeding days are over, because we think she deserves a happy retirement.
